Building skills, confidence and career pathways in Southeast Tasmania

Young people across Southeast Tasmania are building confidence, gaining industry-recognised qualifications and exploring career opportunities through Business and Employment Southeast Tasmania's (BEST) Regional Engagement and Experience Program (REEP), supported by the Tasmanian Community Fund.

Designed to help students navigate the transition from school to further education, training or employment, the program continues to connect participants with personalised coaching, workplace experiences and industry training.

Term 2 has been particularly busy, with 34 students completing work experience placements across industries including construction, engineering, agriculture, aquaculture, administration, early childhood education, beauty and the arts.

Participants also achieved 131 industry-recognised credentials, including Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA), White Card and First Aid qualifications, helping them build practical skills and strengthen their employment prospects.

The program has also expanded its reach, welcoming its first home-schooled participant. Through one-on-one coaching and tailored community experiences, the student has been supported to explore personal interests, build confidence and connect with new opportunities beyond the traditional classroom.

One of the term's standout success stories was Olly, who secured a Certificate III in Carpentry apprenticeship after receiving support with resume preparation, interview skills and goal setting from the REEP team.

"I couldn't have done this without you, Tegan," Olly said.

Students also had the opportunity to broaden their career horizons by attending the Australian Defence Force Expo, where they spoke with Defence personnel, explored career pathways and participated in hands-on activities designed to showcase future education and employment opportunities.

Looking ahead, REEP participants will continue taking part in work experience placements, employer site visits and industry tours, while also visiting TasTAFE campuses and universities to explore vocational and higher education options.

In partnership with Sorell Library and RACT, eligible students will also be supported to work towards obtaining their learner licence, helping remove another barrier to future education and employment.
