Tasmanian Learning Commission Supporting Young People to Shape Education
The Tasmanian Learning Commission (TASLC) is placing students at the centre of leading research, providing evidence-informed recommendations to improve Tasmanian schools.
The TASLC model has been operating for six months, and the Tasmanian Community Fund (TCF) recently attended the student’s expo day at Brighton High School, where they showcased their learning journeys and some of the conclusions they have made since the model began.
The TCF have provided funding for TASLC to run over for the next three years, which will have a significant impact on the Tasmanian education system through student-led improvements.
The project draws on successful approaches used in the Northern Territory and South Australia, where student led inquiry has improved engagement, belonging and wellbeing in schools.
Hobart City High School Principal Brittany Rostenberg said the initiative was already shifting culture.
“This has really got the opportunity to transform learning in Tasmania,” she said.
“The more that we can have students side by side unpacking their data and understanding how they drive improvement in their schools is a key to unlocking brilliant results, bright futures for our young people.”
Commissioners (the students) shared the progress of their work which included investigations into belonging, engagement and student wellbeing.
Hobart City High School student Hunter said the experience had been empowering.
“I feel like I actually have a voice as a young adult, rather than just being unheard until I am older,” he said.
“It makes a difference when teachers are dedicated to hearing what you have to say.
“Being here is making a real difference to all the schools that are a part of it.”
