Great Lakes Community Centre greenhouse opens

Earlier in December the Great Lakes Community Centre opened their ground breaking new greenhouse.

The geothermal greenhouse stores heat generated during the summer underground, which is then used to warm the greenhouse over the winter.

Due to the harsh weather conditions of Miena, many struggle to grow their own food due to the very short growing season.

The new greenhouse means residents are able to grow food all year round.

“It is very beneficial, because they can get fresh veggies all year round without having to go into town, and at a reduced cost,” Gardening Manager Ian Bessell said.

The Tasmanian Community Fund (TCF) provided over $250,000 to the construction of this greenhouse, which will be a safe haven for the residents of Miena.

During winter the Miena community often experience isolation due to the extreme weather conditions.

This greenhouse will provide a perfect place for residents to connect with each other while growing fresh produce.

“This is an isolated community and to be able come in here during winter, get out of that isolation where you are bunkering down in your houses, and come in here and have a cup of tea with the community is important,” Great Lakes Community Centre supporter Jason Garrett said.

“The mental health attributes that this will have long term, is significant. We expect  that there will be a significant improvement in the mental health of this community.”

TCF Chairperson Sally Darke said that the project has created a productive and meaningful place for locals to come together and connect.

“Miena is isolated and facilities like the geothermal greenhouse will make a huge difference for residents year round, we congratulate all involved in bringing the project to life.”
