EdConnect Celebrates Volunteers Supporting Student Learning

EdConnect recently hosted an awards event recognising the volunteers and schools involved in the program’s first year in the North and North West.

The event brought together volunteers, participating schools and supporters to acknowledge the time, care and commitment that has gone into supporting students who are at risk of disengaging from school.

Volunteer mentors have been working alongside teachers in classrooms to help build student confidence while providing additional support in literacy and numeracy.

EdConnect North and North West Tasmanian Liaison Officer Rosalie Brown said the awards were an important opportunity to reflect on the impact of the program and to thank everyone involved.

“It was a celebration of the completion of our first year of volunteering, and a chance to thank both the schools and our volunteers for welcoming the program so warmly,” she said.

Schools invited to the awards included inaugural participants Somerset Primary School, East Ulverstone Primary School, Hillcrest Primary School and Devonport High School.

Ms Brown said it was especially rewarding to see schools and volunteers together in the same room.

“You could really see how supportive the schools have been and how much they value having volunteers working with their students,” she said.

This year, EdConnect awarded two Volunteers of the Year, Lynn Steven and Samuel Brown, following strong positive feedback from schools.

Looking ahead, EdConnect hopes to build on the success of the first year by expanding the program to more schools across the region.

“The results have been life changing for some students and we want to see that impact continue to grow,” Ms Brown said.

The Tasmanian Community Fund is proud to support EdConnect and its volunteers as they help strengthen learning, confidence and connection for young Tasmanians.
