In Round 23 the Tasmanian Community Fund provided nearly $6 000 to Lilydale Arts, a branch of Tasmanian Regional Arts to design and paint Lilydale’s power poles.

Lilydale Arts has been promoting excellence and diversity in the arts and cultural activities in Lilydale for more than 20 years. Each year the Lilydale community is provided with access to a variety of activities and events to engage them in arts projects and programs. These range from a Winter Solstice Lantern Workshop and Walk, exhibitions, music performances, workshops and the annual Christmas pantomime.

The painted poles project aimed to rejuvenate, by creating new artworks, the mural painted power poles along the main road in Lilydale. The themes of the new paintings represent the reasons why people live in the community and highlight Lilydale’s fascinating history and the natural environment (including the native lily after which Lilydale was named). The themes also celebrate the people who have significantly contributed to the Lilydale community in the past and present and the activities in which they have been involved.

The project, also supported by the Launceston City Council, drew volunteers from across the community to assist the artists with the selection of the pole designs, the painting of the poles and the communication of the process to locals and visitors alike. Volunteers included children from Lilydale District School who designed and painted their own pole. To quote the organisers the project engaged the community through shared paintbrushes. To fully participate in the project artists and volunteers had to follow strict Aurora and Council occupational health and safety requirements to make sure that there was no risk of injury whilst the poles were being painted. Throughout the 14-month painting process locals and visitors would regularly stop by to see how the poles were progressing and to pass their opinion on the outcomes. The project brought the community together and increased the community's pride in their town. It is now a common sight to see locals introducing themselves to visitors to explain the background to the poles or to share a story of the town.
