Delta Society Australia is a national non-profit organisation working in Tasmania to promote and facilitate positive interaction between people and companion animals. Currently it pursues this mission through four core projects:

  • the Canine Good Citizen™ education programs;
  • the Delta Dog Safe project;
  • the Delta Therapy Dogs Australia™ program; and
  • the Delta Classroom Canines program

The Tasmanian Community Fund has funded two Delta Society Australia projects. The first provided funds for the Society to purchase a 3m x 3m gazebo and two tables. This has enabled the Society to have a presence at outdoor events and/or displays at expos as it is vital to provide cover and protection for volunteers and Delta Dogs. Having a presence at these events enables the Society to provide information to the public, helps them to recruit more volunteers and, through Service Provider Expos, makes their programs known to more aged care facilities.

The second Tasmanian Community Fund project provided funds to support the recruitment and training of fifteen new volunteers to meet the growing demand for services from aged care facilities. The visits by the volunteers and their dogs to aged care residents brings joy and sparks memories of happier times which have a positive impact on residents’ lives. The interactions help to relieve anxiety and sadness and promote general well being. In some cases, it also assists to break down some of the sense of social isolation that can exist in aged care facilities.
